Libryinth

The DARK LORD's dungeon denizens are hungry: for KNOWLEDGE.
Maintain a vast collection of books and fulfill your ghoulish patrons' requests in this tiny library simulator!
Dear Head Librarian,
Thou art aware thine predecessor hath failed me. For neglecting mine minions and placing mine library in disorder, they have been cast into the deep mines.
Thou art henceforth bound to serve unflaggingly, lest thou meet a similar fate.
- The DARK LORD (your boss)
How to Play
Requests
Patrons at the counter will request a book by its Title, Author, Subject, or Call Number.

(Optional) Retrieve a card from the catalog Drawers to aid with finding the requested book.
There are three sets of catalog cards, organized Title, Author, and Call Number respectively.

Navigate to the corresponding bookcase and retrieve the book.

Return to the counter to hand the book to the patron.
Help 15 patrons and the DARK LORD will be pleased enough to give you a break (win game).
Returns
Some patrons at the counter will be returning a book.
Use the book's Call Number to return it to the correct bookcase.
Keep the library and its bookcases organized or face:
The Blue Wall of Death

The DARK LORD has installed a state-of-the-art magical barrier to keep the library perpetually organized. The barrier activates when an out-of-order book is detected and plays a helpful alarm.
To disable the barrier, reshelve the offending book to the correct location. See below for how to interpret Call Numbers.
Call Numbers
- [Aisle][Bookcase][Letter Code]
- Example: 12f
- Domain: Nature (Directory located at the start of the shelves)
- Section: Bestiaries (Directory located at the end of each aisle)
- Letter Code: F
- Directions: Go to the aisle labeled 10a-14z, then the bookcase labeled 12a-z. Bookcases are organized alphabetically by letter code. 12f would come after 12e and before 12g.

this is rly fun and cute, i had a good time playing it :D
Had a lot of fun with this! It's very relaxing! The lil sprites are so so cute. You did a great job on this!
As a librarian, this game was delightful! Keep up the great work!
I love this game 😠The art style gives it a satisfying sense of depth. The patrons look really cute! And I think the loop is simple but so so fun!
HOW WAS THIS EVEN MADE IN PICO 8?
You sound like me every time I see POOM...

Gameplay and Critique ;)
Thanks for the playthrough, always enjoy seeing live gameplay.
I can see how the finger not being centered in catalog cards is confusing- thinking of drawing the rest of the arm so it can be centered. Pico-8 has a lot of imposed limitations such as audio/controls, though that's part of the charm of working with it!
Glad enjoyed overall!
This is a wonderful concept and execution. Finishing it was super satisfying. I felt like the game doesn't have many ways to fail, which made it feel chill but slightly less engaging.
Reading the book names was funny! Are the titles and authors randomly generated?
Yeah I did debate adding a timer ala Paper Please, but was going make stressful which isn't the vibe wanted. Agree some sort of pushback would be good though, it just needs to be the right kind which I think will find with playtesting.
The titles/authors are randomly combined strings, the author last names are pulled from a preset table and then given a random first initial. I tried to equally distribute last names alphabetically, so that the drawers would be semi-evenly sized.
Very unique design concept, looks intruiging!
Is there a way throw books at the head librarian? ;)
